High Fever in Dogs

The four-leg kid looks good when they are in the house creating naughtiness. Once they sit, it makes the house sad and calm.

Our pet dogs fall sick with fever sometimes or we can term it pyrexia. The rise in the body temperature or we can say above the normal, the range in dogs and cats is usually 100°F to 102°F. When it goes above the 102°can be termed pyrexia or hyperthermia. The body temperature going down from 100°F is known as hyperthermia. The living being's bodies are well accustomed to adapting to the external environment with the body temperature for maintaining homeostasis. It is normal for a puppy or kitten to have comparatively a warmer body temperature as compared to an adult dog or cat. The pets have an increased or decreased rate of metabolism owing to temperature fluctuations, environment, and growth-stage which invariably affects their body temperature.

Any Difference Between the two types of temperature

Yes, pyrexia and hyperthermia are the different processes. The term hyperthermia derives from the words Hyper: Rise/Increase and Thermia: Temperature, which is the sudden rise in temperature due to environmental conditions, stress, any physical exercise, etc. Hyperthermia usually happens due to exercise generally more than half an hour. If your baby pet still feels uncomfortable or shows signs of high temperature it may be some other issue and it could be fever due to some ongoing pathology.

The signs and symptoms of pyrexia:

1. Temperature: The body temperature is noted by taking the rectal temperature by using the digital thermometer. You can learn from your Vet take your pets’ body temperature at home.

3. Lethargy/ Fatigue: If you are noticing your pet is not being their fun self and are being lethargic, sluggish, sitting at one corner, isolating themselves, or any behavior which was not done earlier then these are the symptom of some disease process, and checking for the body temperature.

4. Anorexia: The condition where your pet is not ready to eat food or drink water. It is gradual, where your pet starts eating lesser quantities of food than usual and slowly in total refuses food and water. This can be a sign of fever pathology in the body.

4. Depression: Isolation, tiredness, sleeping for longer hours, and weakness all are signs of the disease process.

5. Hyperpnoea/ Hyper Ventilation: Hyperpnoea means an increase in breathing rate. Due to the increase in body temperature, there is an increase in breathing rate as the body is trying to get rid of the excess heat through the panting or breathing process.

Other Signs: With the infections and inflammatory conditions, such as gastritis, and gastroenteritis, there are other signs and symptoms which you may observe, for instance, vomiting, diarrhea, and so on.

The reason for the change in temperature

1. Metabolism: A transient temperature rise is noted as the metabolism rate increases. Dogs’ normal body temperature is normally on the higher end [100-102 F] as compared to humans.

2. Age & Growth Factor: The puppies and kittens are comparatively warmer and better cuddle buddies as compared to adults. The young ones have a higher body fat percentage, which helps them to maintain their body temperature properly and they can adapt aptly to the environmental fluctuations. Thereby, age does play a minor role in temperature variations.

3. Stress: Even the pets have stress, emotional trauma, mental agony, and anxiety which affect the pets’ health. The stress can raise the body temperature of your pets to a certain extent. Even walking in the sun in, the afternoon hours can cause ‘Heat Stroke’ if they are subjected to unnecessarily high temperatures for long period.

4. Infections: It is the most important cause of pyrexia or ‘Fever’. The high temperature for extended periods has its adverse effects. A temperature rise is an important event during infections representing the fact that the body is fighting against external pathogens.

5. Inflammatory Conditions: Inflammation usually follows any infection, causing pyrexia, pain, redness at the site of inflammation, swelling, and rise in temperature at the site of inflammation as well as temporary loss of function in the affected region.

6. Fever of Unknown Origin: FUO is used when there is no cause of fever identified. Specific Diagnostic tests are carried out to rule out various causes of pyrexia for the diagnosis helping in the treatment plan for our pets.

7. Miscellaneous Reasons:

· Auto-Immunity, Hypersensitivity, etc.

· Neoplastic Conditions [Cancer/Chemotherapy]

· Allergic Response.

Diagnosing Fever

The fever is an indication of some ongoing issue within the body. For Gastritis associated fever and related signs, your vet may suggest certain tests like blood pictures, X-rays to rule out foreign body or impaction cases, and related testing procedures. It is important to visit the Vet regularly and especially during health issues. The diagnosis becomes easier with the diagnostic tools; it helps the Vet to start the treatment.
